Gauge pegged but engine is not overheating

2010 RANGER 2.3. Temperature gauge is pegged, temperature light is on but engine is not overheating. Now, check engine light has come on and engine is missing/sputtering.
Also have been having trouble cold starting. Have to crank too long before it will fire.
Could this be just a bad temperature sensor and if so where is it located? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
